Obituary for John Rogers
John Joseph Rogers, Jr. of Chambersburg, Pa. died peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on July 30, 2022. He was 62.
Born August 11, 1959 in Philadelphia, Pa., he was the son of the late John J. and Ann (Crean) Rogers; and preceded in death by his sister Teri (David) Spencer. He was a graduate of Upper Moreland Senior High School in Willow Grove, Pa. and continued his education at Millersville University.
His incredible parents shaped him to be an athlete who excelled in football and wrestling, but would eventually find his calling on the golf course. A longtime member of the PGA of America, Rogers pursued a career at various golf courses and clubs throughout Pennsylvania. Following a stint as a head golf professional in Cross Junction, Va., Rogers became the head professional at The Majestic Ridge Golf Club in Chambersburg in 1993 where he spent nearly 20 years devoted to teaching others the art of the game. Among several accolades and recognitions throughout his career, Rogers received a national award in 2011 from the PGA of America which honors a member for outstanding contributions to professional education. He also served as President of the Philadelphia PGA Section.
Even though he had an accomplished career, the real joy of his life was his family. With his beautiful bride of 33 years, Christine Bennett Rogers, they were the proud parents of J. Kyle Rogers of Harrisonburg, Va., Taylor (Hogan) Ross of Lancaster, Pa. and Molly Rogers (Ignacio Garcia) of Chambersburg. He took pride in helping them pursue their dreams and happiness. He was there for them through every step of their journey through life while demonstrating unconditional love to each.
Rogers had a quick wit, a penchant to make others laugh, a sincere passion to mentor golf beginners and fellow professionals. He certainly lived up to the 'Rogers' name through his tenacious spirit and by accomplishing tasks his own way. A natural born leader and teacher, Rogers took the approach of guiding others warmly. His smile and laugh will be remembered forever by all of those who loved him.
In addition to his beloved wife and children, Rogers is survived by his sisters Barbara (Gregory) Torrence of Warrington, Pa., and Kim Jagaczewski of Hatboro, Pa. He's known as Uncle John to several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 6 in Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 320 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg, Pa. The family will receive visitors one hour prior to the service Saturday afternoon in the new church narthex. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his honor may be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital at www.stjude.org.
